The Magic Keyboard launched alongside the iPad Pro in Spring 2020. When Apple released the M1 iPad Pro 12.9″ in Spring 2021, its Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) display made the chassis slightly thicker than the previous model — enough that the original Magic Keyboard no longer fitted properly. Apple therefore introduced a new SKU with a redesigned, slightly thicker hinge to accommodate it. The 11″ models remained the same thickness, so no new SKU was required there.
